Using more than 555,000 housing transactions from 1990–2021 matched with 25 U.S. CCUS projects, we find that homes within 4.2 km experience an average price premium of 3.90%—approximately $8,582—with no measurable effect beyond this distance. The effects vary by facility type and distance: capture facilities increase property values primarily within 3–4.2 km, consistent with employment and local economic spillovers, while storage facilities generate more localized premiums within 1 km, likely reflecting direct compensation to nearby landowners. Comparisons with similar non-CCUS facilities suggest that these effects are attributable to the addition of CCUS equipment. Our findings provide new evidence for CCUS siting, community engagement, and benefit-sharing policies. Jan, Greg, Keywan, all, Super news – I recycled the nomination we had for ERC Public Engagement with Research Award (attached) for this big NSS Award: https://www.thenss.org/2025conferencehome/2025awards And we won!! The nomination mentioned all four of us (PIK/MCC, Aarhus, IIASA and Wisconsin-Madison) so it truly reflects the entire project. I’ll need to use the $1,000 to offset my own costs for the registration fee, airfare and accommodation (costing more than $1,000) but this is a very competitive, national award. We should be proud, and also perhaps draft a press release to showcase this in the Fall when I collect the award. We’re also still competitive for the ERC Public Engagement Award which comes with a $10,000 prize, so winning both would be incredible, although also deserved, in my view. So, well done to us! A multiplicity of tomorrows: how people imagine the future with climate interventions

Greetings colleagues, I've been saving this post for after the Easter Holiday. Kenneth Boulding is reputed to have once said: "The human experience can almost be summed up in the observation that, whereas all decisions are of the past, all decisions are about the future." It is with this deep appreciation for ruminating about climate futures that we led a participatory technology foresight exercise across 44 focus groups in 22 countries to explore how the public imagines the deployment of carbon removal and geoengineering technologies by 2030. A new paper explores imagined futures where climate interventions, like solar radiation modification (SRM) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR), reshape our world. The key takeaways, according to Debnath: Diversity matters - Futures vary wildly across cultures, geopolitics, and technologies. Public perspectives shape policy - Inclusive dialogue is critical for climate action. We face a multiplicity of tomorrows - There's no single future, only choices. In the context of increasing global warming, alternative climate intervention strategies are gaining prominence in policy, scientific, media, and public discourse. This study provides novel insights into public perceptions of these interventions, and the foreseeable changes for the near future, through a global foresight exercise involving 44 focus groups across 22 countries, evenly divided between the Global North (e.g. Australia, Germany, United States) and the Global South (e.g., Brazil, India, South Africa). Engaging 323 participants, the study explored imagined futures where climate interventions-such as solar radiation modification and large-scale carbon removal-are widely implemented in 2030. The participants generated 299 distinct futures, each characterized by an imagined newspaper headline, key actor(s), events and specific outcomes. In this paper, these futures are analyzed across the dimensions of technology, societal impact, actor networks, and in terms of spatial and scalar considerations. The findings reveal an extraordinary diversity of futures, ranging from optimistic futures of technological innovation and disease eradication to pessimistic futures of ecological disruption, the spread of cancer, and social inequities. This study underscores the plurality of perspectives on climate intervention futures, reflecting the interplay of cultural, geopolitical, and technological factors. By illuminating the breadth of futures, these findings provide timely insights to inform the development of inclusive, culturally sensitive climate policies at a critical juncture in the global response to climate change.

Update on new features in the IIASA Scenario Explorers

Dear GENIE colleagues, I would like to share an update on some of the new features that the Scenario Services team at IIASA has recently implemented in the Scenario Explorer front-end, which are now also available in the CDR Knowledge hub. As shared last year we added a data explorer to the CDR Knowledge hub to visualize the scenarios data. [cid:6550682a-1dad-428a-8a62-7c3dec901e7e] We now support native model regions and have added a map explorer to visualize the time-series data on a map. Below is an example of the R5 regions visualized. You can now choose between multiple stacking options, customize colors, and use a highlight-dataset feature to easily identify specific time series.
