In this landscape, Human-Centered Software Engineering (HCSE) plays a pivotal role in ensuring that software development remains aligned with user needs, ethical principles, and broader societal impacts. This edition of the HCSE workshop focuses on the intersection of Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, and Human Value, emphasizing the need for new approaches in designing socio-technical systems that integrate intelligent automation while preserving human agency and well-being. With AI-driven decision-making, adaptive interfaces, and autonomous systems becoming ubiquitous, it is crucial to explore how software engineering can accommodate these innovations while maintaining transparency, fairness, and user trust. Beyond the traditional themes of IFIP 13.2 workshops, this edition invites contributions fostering discussion among researchers and practitioners, to advance the dialogue on how HCSE can evolve to meet the demands of modern digital ecosystems while staying true to its human-centric principles. Contributions are invited that explore innovative methodologies, design principles, and case studies that highlight how intelligent software systems can be designed to enhance, rather than diminish, human experience. The ultimate goal is to develop approaches that harmonize interaction, artificial intelligence, and human value, fostering the creation of software that is not only powerful and efficient, but also trustworthy, inclusive, and ethically responsible. Target Audience and Expected Outcomes This workshop is open to everyone who is interested in aspects of human–computer interaction from a user-centered perspective. Typical contributions to this workshop focus on methods, processes and approaches for designing, building and testing inter-active systems. We expect a high participation of IFIP Working Group 13.2 members. We particularly invite participants to present position papers describing real-life case studies that illustrate how they rethought HCI’s and SE’s interplay in order to address aspects such as agile development, sustainability, artificial intelligence, ethical considerations, and cybersecurity. Any perspective and related aspects of user interface design are welcome. We are especially interested in work that deals with current trends that change the way humans develop, use, interact and collaborate with technical components in socio-technical systems. We are also interested in methods, theories and tools for managing context of use and autonomous adaptation at design and run-time. Position papers will be made available through the workshop website. Furthermore, an extended version of selected papers will be considered for inclusion in a Springer LNCS post-proceedings volume published in conjunction with the other INTERACT workshops organized by the IFIP TC13 Working Groups. Workshop Format This full-day workshop is in person only. It is organized around presentation of position papers and working activities in small groups. From the set of contributions, a subset of selected case studies will be invited to be presented at the beginning of the workshop and will be used to support the discussion that follows. The morning session will be dedicated to welcoming participants and presenting case studies. Participants will be invited to comment on the case studies and to report similar experiences. The afternoon sessions will be devoted to interactive sessions, where participants will be engaged to work in small groups and propose solutions to the problems of the case studies seen in the morning. Solutions proposed by the participants will be compiled and compared. Based on the lessons learned, participants will be incited to draft an agenda of future work that can be accomplished. We plan to run the workshop onsite in person only. If circumstances require it, we intend to switch to a completely digital format that will be run online. We will continuously adapt to any decision regarding the conference format by the INTERACT 2025 organizers. Submission Instructions In order to attend the workshop, participants are invited to submit position papers reporting original academic or industrial research relevant to the workshop's theme. These position papers (PDF files, 6-10 pages in Springer LNCS format, including abstract) shall report (practical) experiences related to research challenges and results on human-centered software engineering or user-centered development processes for interactive systems with a particular focus on digital-transformation aspects and technologies (such as mobile and wearable devices, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Blockchain, Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Digital Twin, Cybersecurity) and their impact on software properties or software development practices. Submissions are not anonymous and should include all author names, affiliations, and contact information. Authors should also provide in their submission a short summary of their experience in the field and their motivation to participate in this workshop. Submissions will be processed via the workshop web pages that will be managed by the workshop organizers at IFIP WG 13.2. Papers are submitted through the EasyChair website <https://easychair.org/conferences?conf=hcse-interact2025>. Submitted position papers will be reviewed by an international program committee comprising the organizers and selected members of IFIP Working Group 13.2 who are experts in the field. Participants will be invited to attend the workshop based on the result of the reviewing process. Accepted position papers will be made available through the workshop website. Upon acceptance, at least one author of each accepted position paper must register and attend the workshop. Furthermore, an extended version of selected papers will be considered for inclusion in a Springer LNCS post-proceedings volume published in conjunction with the other INTERACT 2025 workshops organized by the IFIP TC13 Working Groups. NordiCHI 2025 Summer School – Call for Participation NordiCHI 2025 Summer School The NordiCHI 2025 Summer School will take place in Bergen, Norway, from June 16th to 18th, 2025. The NordiCHI research community arranges summer schools in the years between its biennial NordiCHI conferences. Similar to the first NordiCHI summer school in 2023, this year’s event is hosted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and the University of Oslo. Call for participation We invite PhD students in Human-Computer Interaction and related research fields to submit a proposal for evaluation. The admission to the school will be based on the review of the proposal. Dates and venue * Dates: 16th – 18th June, 2025 * Venue: Baroniet Rosendal, two hours south of Bergen by bus/boat. Programme The format of the summer school will be a combination of lectures by invited lecturers, PhD student presentations with feedback, and plenary discussions. The limited number of PhD students (max. 15) will allow for dialogue and discussions in the spirit of the NordiCHI conferences. The project is led by Professor Sampsa Hyysalo and includes partners from five different Finnish universities and organisations (www.materialdemocracy.fi) Material Democracy explores the future of democracy amid major societal changes related to climate change, urbanization, the green transition, and species loss. These complex challenges have widespread consequences, creating unequal public participation and inclusion opportunities. To address this issue, Material Democracy creates a new innovative approaches into developing the formats and practices of democratic participation in infrastructure, energy, and environmental policies and citizens everyday lives. An important part of the project is to establish the Material Democracy Hub, which will document, display, compare and further develop democratic practices and democratic innovations. The doctoral researcher will have an important role in the team that ideates, sets-up and designs the Material Democracy hub and its potential multiple components (activities, platform, practices) and/or conducts further research through the case materials documented in the Hub. The selected applicant will have to also apply successfully to the ARTS Doctoral programme during the six-month probation period for the position. The selected applicant is thus expected to to be able to develop a high quality research plan for the ARTS Doctoral programme soon after being hired. May 2025 This course for PhD students provides an introduction to contemporary Participatory Design as a particular field of interdisciplinary research and practice. Participatory Design grew out of a concern for democracy and empowerment of users in the development and implementation of digital technology in the workplace. Today, the political values and ambitions of mutual learning through engagement and democratic innovation tunnels the field into diverse settings and challenges of society and the planet. Participants will be introduced to contemporary agendas regarding user participation in the development of new digital technologies, as well as the diversification of Participatory Design to new domains and non-Western regions. This event is a forum for in-depth research discussions and sharing of experiences, problems, success stories, and tradeoffs between different research directions in a stimulating, open, and safe environment. We expect that participants will come from a variety of disciplines to create a lively interdisciplinary environment. As part of submissions to the Doctoral Consortium, we invite you to consider the conference title, “computing (x) crisis”, and how this relates your research to alternatives to current directions in computing, for instance via methodological or theoretical developments, or present new forms of critical or societal engagements and action.
