[vip-all] AMO seminar today 15:15 in Aud. G2 (1532)

Title: Hybrid approach to quantum optomechanics Speaker: Claudiu Genes Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Innsbruck Time: Thursday, November 3rd, 15.15 to 16.00 Place: Aud. G2, bygn. 1532 NOTE: NOT IN PHYS. AUD.! Abstract: Recent theoretical, and most importantly, experimental success has been achieved in optically controlling the motion of macroscopic mechanical resonators (vibrating cavity-end mirror/membrane/cantilever etc) at the quantum level. The optical control is established by employing the radiation pressure effect of light on matter, which although weak can be greatly enhanced by the many trips photons are allowed to make in high-finesse optical cavities. By bringing a third party in this mix, namely atomic systems, one can take advantage of the experimentally available toolbox for the manipulation of quantum states for internal structure of atoms/ions to indirectly control quantum states of the mechanical resonator. We exemplify such a hybrid optomechanics approach with a few recent theoretical efforts in this direction that analyze the possibility to i) enhance the optical cooling via an intracavity two-level atomic ensemble, ii) couple, cool and entangle an EIT cavity 3-level atom system to a mechanical resonator, and iii) strongly couple a single atom to a vibrating membrane.
