Speaker: Henrik Cederquist, Physics Department, Stockholm University, Sweden Title: Fullerene fusion Time: November 12, 15.15 to 16.00 Place: Fysisk Auditorium Abstract: In the talk I will first briefly refer to the discovery of the fullerene group of molecules. I will then discuss the issue concerning the very efficient production of certain magic fullerene molecules such as C60, C70, and C84 under different experimental and environmental conditions. These magic molecules have slightly higher binding energies per atom than their fullerene neighbours but the differences are very small and it has been debated how it is possible to create conditions under which these fullerenes (in particular C60 and C70) become so very dominant. I will describe an experiment in which we do produce some magic fullerene molecules, such as e.g. C84 and C70, by fusing C60 building blocks of collisionally heated (ion collisions) weakly bound clusters of C60 fullerenes.
