Dear all, You are hereby invited to a workshop on programming and computational skills @IFA hosted by IFA and ST Learning Lab. The workshop will be held in relation to Morten Hjorth-Jensen’s (Michigan State University and University of Oslo) visit to the department on 23 October. He will give an Ole Rømer Colloquium entitled "Integrating computational perspectives in physics (and science) courses" (see e.g: http://phys.au.dk/aktuelt/nyhed/artikel/ole-roemer-colloquium-morten-hjort-j...). We invite everyone with interest in the topic to participate in a more interactive workshop with Morten before the colloquium. The workshop takes place from 12.00 to 14.00 (room 1520-737). Please follow this link to sign up for the workshop: https://events.au.dk/Programmingandcomputationalskills-workshop (deadline: 22 October at 10.00). Sandwiches and soft drinks will be served during the workshop. During the workshop, Morten will share experiences and results from implementing a focus on computational and programming skills in the physics programmes at the University of Oslo and Michigan State University. Bjørk Hammer (Department of Physics and Astronomy, AU), Jens Ledet Jensen (Department of Mathematics, AU), and Thomas Bataillon (BiRC) will share experiences and ideas from the Physics and Data Science programmes at ST respectively. We invite participants to share and discuss local initiatives and experiences. Programme 12.00-12.30 Morten Hjorth-Jensen: Experiences from working with computational skills in physics courses. 12.30-13.00 Lunch (Please make sure to sign up) 13.00-13.30 Local initiatives: · Bjørk Hammer: Initiatives and experiences from Physics (including choosing Python over MatLab) · Jens Ledet Jensen and Thomas Bataillon: Computational skills in the Data Science Programme 13.30-14.00 Open discussion: Supporting students computational and programming skills in local science programmes.
