Dear IFA VIP.
Concerning one of the most important funding sources in Danish science in the coming years:
Please see the attached slides for funding opportunities with the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Of particular interest to staff members of our department is:
NERD, New Exploratory Research and Discovery p. 11 (note that you cannot apply if your funding already exceeds 4 mio. per year)
Project Grants p. 12
Interdisciplinary Synergy p. 14 (must be inter-disciplinary, e.g. with someone from molecular biology, medicine, data science or chemistry)
Research Infrastructure programmes p. 15
Data Science Initiative p. 16
Page 8 is very important. You must explicitly describe how your proposal “…may have potential future applications in the life sciences, health sciences, or in biotechnology”. This application may be as far in the future as several decades from now, but you must convince the evaluators that it can be done.
If you choose to apply, the full costs of the project must be included in the budget. NNF does not accept more than 5% indirect costs (‘overhead’), but they are seemingly willing to cover the full cost of the project as long as they know what the money is spent for. For a first estimate of what to include, please see the document “Recommendations for co-funding of externally funded projects (for internal use)” that I sent to many of you June 30th 2021 and include here again. If you do not include the full costs of the project, it is possible - and perhaps necessary because we cannot afford accepting - for me, on behalf of the department, to decline the grant even if NNF is willing to spend the money.
If you have questions, e.g. about eligibility or the like, please call either Morten Bache, Kamilla Nørregaard or Kasper Nørgaard (see page 2). They will much rather have a phone call from you, and help you, than receive an application that does not meet the criteria.
Best regards, Ulrik
