Dear all, As a follow-up for the residential meeting at Vejle, before which I only had response from 2 groups, I kindly ask you to - groupwise, if possible - inform me in writing about your planned activities in connection with talent students: "Please also take responsibility for organizing suggestions for host groups for “Talent students” (i.e. students being admitted to the talent program from their second year); such groups may consist of the entire topical group or one or more subgroups." Please include in your (preferably brief) response which (sub-)groups you suggest, 5-10 keywords about the scientific content, and a bit about which competencies you expect the talent students may obtain from your programme (both the 'soft' such as presentation skills, and the 'hard' such as programming in LabVIEW), and a suggestion for the final evaluation, to be done at the end of the 1/2 year (which product?). General Physics Colloquium Wednesday 26 October at 15.15 in Fys. Aud. Speaker: Simon Albrecht IFA Title Exoplanets@IFA: System architectures of exoplanet systems Abstract: Over the last twenty years astronomers have discovered thousands of planets orbiting other stars than our sun. Many of these exoplanets display characteristics very different from the planets in our own solar system. Among these are planets on very eccentric (highly elliptical) and highly inclined (oblique) orbits. At Aarhus University one of our research foci is on getting a better understanding of these characteristics by measuring the system architectures for systems ranging from hot-Jupiters to systems with small multiple planets. I will explain our techniques and present some recent highlights. We also started studying planets showing Transit Timing Variations (TTV). Here we focus on systems which had not been fully characterized by the Kepler mission due to Kepler's limited life time. These systems we now continue to monitor using ground based telescopes. As usual we will do this as far as possible for the full academic year ahead. Yet some adjustments for the spring 2016 will undoubtedly have to be made later (January). The options are listed in the document attached this message. For those of you who do not speak Danish the possibilities are somewhat limited; you will have to aim for courses without a plain "D". Please report your preferences using the web service Gonzales (adopted from the Department of Computer Science): https://services.brics.dk/java/gonzales/#/vote/PHYS/90/3fef935be8428033 For each semester select a priority for at least 6 options (as far as possible), that is, use all numbers from 1 to 6 once in each semester (or all numbers 1 through 3 once in each quarter). Please use the "comment space" if for some reason you do not want to teach in a given period or if you have to communicate other relevant matters. D: For kurserne Indledende Mekanik, Mekanik & Termodynamik, Elektromagnetisme samt Bølger & Optik på hovedforløbet (kursusrækken startende her til august) vil hovedreglen være, at man tager et helt semester snarere end blot et enkelt kvarter (for at undgå, at de nye studerende ser for mange forskellige ansigter). General Physics Colloquium Wednesday 12 October at 15.15 in Fys. Aud. Speaker: Nathan Harshman American University / IFA Title: Five is Different: Symmetry, Solvability and Entanglement in Quantum Few-Body Systems Abstract: In quantum mechanics, one particle systems are "easy" to solve, and two particles are (technically) always solvable. Three and four particles are a lot harder, and five particles...fuhgettaboutit. But why? And why should we care? The second question is straightforward: phenomena in particle, nuclear, atomic, molecular, and solid state systems can often be reduced to the dynamics of few-body systems. The increasingly precise measurement and control of ultracold atoms in optical traps allows predictions of few-body quantum theory to be tested as never before. Ultracold atoms could be the working material for new quantum technologies that exploit coherence and entanglement to perform efficient information processing. However, answering the first question "why is few body physics so hard" requires looking at how symmetry becomes less and less constraining as the number of particles increases, and finally completely fails (for most systems) at five particles.
