Dear all, As a follow-up for the residential meeting at Vejle, before which I only had response from 2 groups, I kindly ask you to - groupwise, if possible - inform me in writing about your planned activities in connection with talent students: "Please also take responsibility for organizing suggestions for host groups for “Talent students” (i.e. students being admitted to the talent program from their second year); such groups may consist of the entire topical group or one or more subgroups." Please include in your (preferably brief) response which (sub-)groups you suggest, 5-10 keywords about the scientific content, and a bit about which competencies you expect the talent students may obtain from your programme (both the 'soft' such as presentation skills, and the 'hard' such as programming in LabVIEW), and a suggestion for the final evaluation, to be done at the end of the 1/2 year (which product?). Kære alle Sidste år genoplivede vi traditionen med børnejuletræsfest. IT-Support har i øjeblikket mange sager med computere, hvor harddisken går i stykker eller man har været lidt hård med sletningen af filer og har fortrudt. Der bliver brugt rigtig mange timer på at forsøge at genskabe data, og ofte må vi give fortabt. Det er både IT’s tid, medarbejderens tid og potentielt meget vigtige data, der går tabt. Vi vil gerne opfordre til at tage backup af data dagligt. Hvis du har en Windowsmaskine, så erden bedste måde er ved at have en såkaldt ”AD-maskine” dvs. at computeren er meldt i vores AD, og automatisk har en kopi af Dokumenter og Skrivebord på vores filserver. Her tages løbende backup (hver 3. time samt hver nat), og det er med til at sikre at ingen data går tabt. Er der et ufravigeligt krav om at køre en computer som ”Workgroup”, skal man selv sørge for at lave denne backup. Vi anbefaler at lægge backupdata på det personlige netværksdrev. Er din computer en Mac, har AU et lille program kaldet AUITUtility (i daglig tale også Hummeren), som giver mulighed for at lave backup af maskinen til et AU netværksdrev. Ellers anbefales det at gemme direkte på det personlige netværksdrev. Kører din computer Linux, er det lidt forskelligt, hvordan den er sat op alt efter, hvilket institut man tilhører. Det anbefales at gemme direkte på, eller jævnligt kopiere lokale filer over på det personlige netværksdrev. Ultracold plasma fission under Rydberg-gas quantum-state control Ed Grant Department of Chemistry, University of British Columbia, Canada Time: Thursday April 23, 15:15 Duration: 45 minutes Place: 1520-732 Coffee, tea and cake will be served at 15:01 Abstract The state of strong coupling plays an important role in the charge transport properties of complex systems ranging in size from nanoparticles to globular star clusters. Ultracold plasmas afford a means to study strongly coupled systems with quantum state control in a laboratory setting. This talk will describe the behaviour of the ellipsoidal molecular ultracold plasma that evolves from a state-selected nitric oxide Rydberg gas in a seeded supersonic molecular beam. In one type of experiment, we propagate this plasma 600 mm in z to strike an imaging detector that records the charge distribution in x and y. Detected images detail the evolution of charged-particle density as a function of selected Rydberg gas initial principal quantum number, n0 and Rydberg gas density, *0. We find that conditions of high n0 or high *0 systematically break the ellipsoidal symmetry of plasma expansion. This symmetry breaking occurs when Penning ionization and avalanche in the core of the ellipsoid leads plasma formation in the wings. Ions accelerated by electron-gas expansion in *x transfer momentum to Rydberg molecules. As the plasma develops, the expanding gas of hot electrons pushes beyond the ions, causing exterior conditions to deviate from quasi-neutrality. The lowered potential energy of the resulting double-layer acts as a surface tension. When the electron kinetic energy transferred to ion motion in the opposing elements of plasma volume exceeds the surface tension about x = 0, the ellipsoid spontaneously separates to form volumes with smaller surface area and higher stability, much like the separation of a rotating liquid drop, or the fission of a metal cluster. Overall, this process transforms electron thermal energy, first into radial motion of electrons and ions, then into the recoil energy of plasma lobes. Kære alle. (English summary below) Førsteårskurset "Bølger og optik" afsluttes med et to-ugers projektforløb (i uge 21 og 22, dvs. i perioden 18/5-29/5). I disse to uger aflyses al fysikundervisning, således at de studerende har 1/3 af deres tid til rådighed til at gennemføre et teoretisk eller eksperimentelt projekt og skrive en rapport og et resume', som indgår ved den mundtlige eksamen. Projekterne skal i bred forstand falde indenfor emnet "Bølger og optik", og de udbydes af JER. Der er instruktorer til rådighed til at assistere de studerende med den praktiske gennemførsel af projekter, hvis det er aktuelt. For at give dig en ide' om, hvad et sådant projekt kan indebære, vedlægger jeg sidste års projektkatalog. Jeg håber, at du har lyst til at bidrage til denne væsentlige og motiverende del af kurset, og ser frem til at høre fra dig i løbet af den næste uges tid. English summary: Dear Colleague. The first year course in "Waves and Optics" end with a two week project. Please consider to give a smaller group of first-year students the possibility of undertaking this activity - a small theoretical or experimental project - in your research group. The topic should be within "Waves and optics" in a general sense. The enclosed note (in Danish) shows last years list of topics. The period in question is calendar weeks 21 and 22 (May 18th-29th), and the total effort you may expect from the students is 1/3 of their time, i.e. something like 30 hours total, including the writing of a report.
