Speaker: Michael Motsch, Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Garching, Germany Title: Cold guided beams of polar molecules Time: Monday, May 3, 10.15 to 11.00 Place: 1525-323 Abstract: Cold molecules offer exciting new possibilities for research in physics and chemistry. These include molecular precision spectroscopy, investigations of anisotropic collisions, and novel approaches to quantum information. In our experiments, we extract slow polar molecules from a thermal gas by exploiting their interaction with a guiding electric field. By adding buffer-gas cooling, we produce state-purified guided molecular beams of high density. These beams are well suited for loading an electric trap, in which new cooling schemes can be explored. In my outlook, I will briefly describe our progress in the storage of cold polar molecules in a microstructured electric trap, which is an essential step towards the realization of the opto-electrical cooling scheme.
