QCA: QUBITS Seminar by Matthias Christandl on "Fault-tolerant quantum computation"
Dear all, Join us for the next QUBITS Seminar, where Professor Matthias Christiandl, Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, will give a talk entitled: “Fault-tolerant quantum computation” Date: January 21, 2026 Time: 14:15–16:00 Location: iNANO Aud (1593-012) Format: 45-minute talk followed by discussion and refreshments All are welcome! Drinks and snacks will be served after the talk. Please accept this calendar invitation if you plan to attend—it helps us estimate catering needs. About the speaker: Read more about the speaker here via this link<https://projects.au.dk/quantum/news-and-events/item/artikel/fault-tolerant-quantum-computation-by-matthias-christandl>. ABSTRACT The qubit quality of available quantum devices is steadily improving, yet individual qubit operations are expected to remain noisy for the foreseeable future. This poses a fundamental challenge for running large-scale quantum algorithms, such as factoring or materials simulation. In this talk, Matthias Christandl will introduce the key ideas behind fault-tolerant quantum computation, explaining how a virtual noiseless quantum processor can be simulated using noisy hardware—provided the noise level is below a certain threshold. He will also discuss fault tolerance in distributed quantum settings, including multi-core quantum processors and the quantum internet, where quantum information must be transmitted between noisy devices via even noisier communication channels. The talk will provide intuition for how such systems can nevertheless be protected against noise. → Please forward this invitation to interested colleagues who may not already have signed up for information and direct invites from QCA.
