HEALENAE seminar series: Prof. Dr Gregg Mitman & Dr. Emmanuel Roth – Where Mining meets Conservation
by Mia Korsbæk 26 Oct '26

26 Oct '26

Dear doctoral candidates and supervisors You are invited to the second online seminar in the HEALENAE Seminar series. The first seminars are organized from University of Oslo by DC Artemis Janneke Mantheakis and Professor Paul Wenzel Geissler. The seminar series is a monthly online reading seminar that involves the presentation of suggested readings written by the speaker themselves, followed by a discussion and questions session with the speaker. The speakers include supervisors, external advisory board members, and other scholars invited to present topics relevant to specific project themes within HEALENAE related to health and the environment. These seminars create the space to speak directly with researchers and authors in related fields and to regularly bring the cohort together to collaboratively build knowledge, methodological, and analytical capacity on the interlinkages between health and the environment as part of the HEALENAE training programme. *** Prof. Dr Gregg Mitman & Dr. Emmanuel Roth – Where Mining meets Conservation November 5, 2026, 14:15 – 16:00 Prof. Dr Gregg Mitman is a historian, and Dr Emmanuelle Roth is an anthropologist, both interested in health, science, and the environment. Since 2022, they have been working on the European Research Council-funded project "Fragments of the Forest: Hot Zones, Disease Ecologies, and the Changing Landscape of Environment and Health in West Africa.” The project aims to discern the ecological, economic, political, and social forces at play that have turned fragments of the Upper Guinean rainforest in Liberia and Guinea into “hotspots” where biodiversity conservation concerns, emerging infectious disease threats, and resource extraction interests converge. Their feature-length documentary Overburden, directed by Sarita West, explores one such hotspot, the Nimba Mountains on the Liberia–Guinea border, home to some of West Africa’s most endangered species. Overburden follows rangers, scientists, and forest defenders as they navigate the tangled frontier where mining meets conservation, and where memory, science, and power collide. Readings: West, Sarita, dir. Overburden. Produced by Gregg Mitman. Los Angeles Black Film Festival, 2026. We will get back to you on how to access the film Roth, Emmanuelle, and Gregg Mitman. “Visual Tailings.” Environmental History 31, no. 2 (2026): 383—392. https://doi.org/10.1086/740272 ***** Join Zoom Meeting https://uio.zoom.us/j/63770390862?pwd=rw5ZaGEFAHB6UU50PObiQ8DsootT8E.1 Meeting ID: 637 7039 0862 Passcode: 650820

Sandbjerg workshop program and PhD presentations
by Mia Korsbæk 01 Oct '26

01 Oct '26

Dear Doctoral Candidates We are looking very much forward to seeing all of you soon in Denmark 😊 Please find a draft program attached. The Opening workshop centers very much around allowing you time to present your projects and get feedback and supervision from the supervisors present. Notes on the PhD project presentations: Each PhD fellow will give a 10–15 minute presentation introducing their PhD project. The purpose is to give the cohort and supervisors a clear sense of your project at this early stage and to identify questions, uncertainties, or challenges that we can discuss together during the workshop. Please prepare a short PowerPoint presentation of maximum 5 slides and send to Mia by October 27. Your presentation should include: * Your project in brief Introduce the overall topic and context of your PhD project. * Research aims and questions What do you want to understand or explore? Present your main research aim(s) and preliminary research question(s). * Research design Briefly describe how you currently envisage carrying out the project, including relevant methods, field sites/settings, participants etc. * Practical questions and anticipated challenges Highlight a few issues that are particularly relevant to your project at this stage. These might concern, for example, access to the field, recruitment, ethics, language, methods, data collection, collaboration with institutions or communities. Please also formulate one or two questions that you would especially like feedback or discussion on from the cohort and supervisors. * Preliminary timeline Give a simple overview of your current plan for the PhD, including anticipated periods of fieldwork/data collection, secondment, analysis, writing, training activities. At this stage, we are not expecting a fully developed or fixed project plan. Projects will change as they develop. The aim of the presentation is therefore also to make visible the questions that are still open and to use the collective experience of the group to think them through, and discover how the individual projects are related to each other. Dietary requirements: Please write back to Mia if you have any special dietary requirements. Warm wishes, Lotte and Mia
