sensor selection in pilots Re: support, questions Re: bi0SpaCE - Technical Data Sheets for Sensor Purchase Approval
Hello Clara, Thanks for information from sensor vendors I have to ask Daniel for supporting me in the further clarification: since all sensors, selected by naturea, offers Modbus RTU communication (except pH sensor), is there any problem (from your point of view) in using these sensors in the naturae pilot FOR ALL PILOTS Since this is a positive example of how the challenge of sensor selection in pilots (important task for pilots in this period) can be solved using an initial input by the pilot (regarding the list of sensors) and a successful communication between the pilot and its technical partner, I am asking colleagues from noriware, Fiskeby and Greenlab (and corresponding technical partners), to follow the following steps: 1. Based on pilot inputs provided in D2.1 and other discussions, pilot (together with the technical partner) writes an email to me providing the list of sensors in a simple form: sensor vendor name - sensor name - measured parameters We need this in order to check the completeness of the sensors you have selected (related to the requirements given in D2.1 - hopefully you are aware of this) If there is a problem in this step, we will organize a teleconference for resolving it 2. I will start the discussion with all technical partners about the completeness of the list of sensors and some additional requirements for the particular sensor type 3. Once the list is completed, we nee the answers from ALL sensor vendors on the following questions: a) How the data, which is measured by the sensors, can be accessed? b) Is it possible to get the data in real-time by external apps, i.e. apps which will be developed by us If yes, what are the mechanisms to get real-time data (e.g. is there a SDK for getting this data in a programmatic way) Concrete discussion for naturea pilot can be found in this thread Just ler me know if additional clarifications are needed I would ask you to start this process at your earlies convenience Best regards Nenad ________________________________ From: tecnicoinnovacion1@naturaecosmetic.es <tecnicoinnovacion1@naturaecosmetic.es> Sent: 14 November 2025 15:48 To: 'Dev Ramanujan' <devr@dtu.dk>; 'Daniel Gómez Martín' <dangom@cartif.es>; Nenad Stojanovic <nenad.stojanovic@nissatech.com> Cc: investigacionydesarrollo@e-naturae.com <investigacionydesarrollo@e-naturae.com>; 'Steinmetz, Ina' <ina.steinmetz@iosb.fraunhofer.de>; 'Ljiljana Stojanovic' <ljiljana.stojanovic@iosb.fraunhofer.de>; criveg@cartif.es <criveg@cartif.es>; laumar@cartif.es <laumar@cartif.es>; 'Aníbal Reñones' <aniren@cartif.es>; 'Mario Luis Ruiz' <luirui@cartif.es>; 'Clemente Cárdenas' <clecar@cartif.es>; 'Laura Pablos Lopez' <laulop@cartif.es>; 'fraver' <fraver@cartif.es>; 'ferbur' <ferbur@cartif.es> Subject: RE: support, questions Re: bi0SpaCE - Technical Data Sheets for Sensor Purchase Approval Hello all, Please find below the answers provided by all sensor vendors regarding point b) 2 (real-time data access by external applications): Flow sensor: No, the MODBUS protocol does not provide SDK files. The flow meter always supplies the instantaneous flow rate through the selected additional communication module, in this case MODBUS/RTU, or via the analog signal (4–20 mA). Energy sensors: The energy meters offered are equipped with RS485 Modbus RTU communication. They allow reading both consumed and generated energy, as well as instantaneous values of voltage, current, power, power factor (Cos φ) and several additional variables, depending on the model. The communication of the meters is based on an open protocol commonly known as MODBUS RTU (links to the manual of each meter are attached, with information about memory addresses, data content, and data format). This enables these meters to be read and integrated into systems from CIRCUTOR as well as from other manufacturers, including PLCs, SCADA software, BMS, IoT devices, gateways, API–APP solutions, etc. https://docs.circutor.com/docs/M362B01-01.pdf https://docs.circutor.com/docs/M016B01-01.pdf https://docs.circutor.com/docs/M017B01-01.pdf The vast majority of these devices are integrated into all types of energy management systems by companies familiar with this technology or by software developers, etc. Any system capable of reading devices via Modbus RTU, and using the attached manuals, will be able to read these meters. Using an IoT gateway (attached: eMOD, eMANAGER, LINE TCPRS1, …), these meters can be read and the information can be sent to other platforms and/or in other more functional protocols, or to databases. In this way, the data measured by the sensors can be collected, so the answer to your questions is affirmative. Sometimes such energy meters give a lot more data in ‘advanced’ mode. Specifically, I am interested in knowing, * Will the sensor report voltage and current measurements (which can be used to estimate instantaneous power consumption)? * Will the sensor only report energy consumption data (Wh) ? * What is the sampling frequency of the measurements? @Daniel Gómez Martín<mailto:dangom@cartif.es> – If they are indeed energy meters that can only provide averaged data over a batch, we can also work with them (it’s not ideal but fine). The discrete event simulation model that we plan on working on for Naturae will then be done at an ‘aggregated’ level. However, if it is interesting for Naturae to use high-frequency power measurements as well, we have used some very inexpensive Hall-Effect current sensors<https://www.digikey.dk/en/products/detail/poweruc-electronics/SCT036TS-400-5/25966753?srsltid=AfmBOopLDw7NdtuMONWZ5c3gk6h9esDIk3gfLK0agmeVmQ4Pe_dfHn_c> in the past. They can be easily integrated into a PLC/microcontroller as they have ‘5 Amp analog output’. I am assuming @Nenad Stojanovic<mailto:nenad.stojanovic@nissatech.com> can help you integrate them into the system as well. If we are not wrong (please, correct me if we are), these are "energy meters" not "power analyzers", which are way more expensive. Under our understanding, these devices are standard industrial energy meters intended for energy monitoring. They provide averaged electrical parameters and accumulated energy values over Modbus/RS-485, but we think they do not support the high-frequency sampling of instantaneous power as you mention and would be required to capture cycle-level behavior of 2 Hz or higher per machine cycle. Their update rate is suitable for batch but not for sub-second load profiling. Because of this, the requirement of having a sampling frequency at least twice the smallest unit operation cycle time cannot realistically be met with these meters if we have to go that low. To achieve that type of resolution we would need a different class of equipment (as we said, power quality analyser or high-speed logger with dedicated transducers), which would significantly increase cost and goes beyond Naturae’s current budget for sensorisation. I don't know if the unit cycles of Naturae's machines go that low, and for this, Clara or Nacho could give us more details. But, as of now, the selected meters are adequate for the objectives we thought Naturae should comply: * obtaining reliable batch/line-level energy consumption, * feeding LCA and DPP indicators with measured energy data, and * monitoring energy KPIs over time. A clarification of which is the smallest unit cycle in Naturae's use case is needed and/or if it is needed such type of frequency cycle. If that's the case, then, I think we could have a problem. Unless you could provide some alternatives and in a similar budget of these energy meters. Thank you very much in advance. Best regards, [Image removed by sender. By ‘sufficiently high sampling frequency’ I mean that the sampling frequency should be at least twice or more the cycle time of the smallest unit of operation in the machines. For example, let’s say the bottling unit cycles the ‘filling pump’ on and off every 1 sec, in that case the energy sensor should sample at 2Hz or more. Could you please check if this is the case? Two options are currently being considered: 1. a small PLC together with a PC to store, monitor, and visualise the data, or 2. a PC equipped with a datalogger card (an all-in-one solution).
